After algal blooms resulted in a “Do Not Drink” notice in Lucas County, Ohio, the Toledo-Lucas County Sustainability Commission commissioned an in-depth analysis to determine what tools were available to address water quality issues. During the analysis, the Commission found it difficult to decide on funding mechanisms and priority initiatives because they did not know where the runoff was coming from. To combat the lack of information, the Commission decided to create a nutrient source inventory that showed the sources of runoff throughout the surrounding watersheds. Using the nutrient source inventory, the Commission and its partners have begun working with members of the community to reduce nutrient runoff in the area.
