Jumpstarting climate and sustainability careers
McKinney Climate Fellows
As Indiana and the Midwest contend with the impacts of climate change, IU undergraduate and graduate students are answering the call, working with local governments, businesses, and nonprofits on climate action and sustainability projects.
Collaborate on research that results in a better world
The Sustainability Scholars program pairs selected undergraduate students with world-class faculty mentors to start researching sustainability issues as soon as their first semester at IU. In addition to gaining meaningful research experience and mentorship, students receive a $500-per-semester scholarship.
First- and second-year undergraduate students at IU Bloomington in any major are eligible. This program is administered by the Integrated Program for the Environment with support from ERI and Sustain IU.
Study the environment and sustainability at IU
At Indiana University, everyone has a stake in contributing to a resilient and sustainable future. That’s why academic programs that reflect the interdisciplinary nature of environmental and sustainability challenges can be found at every IU campus.
Here’s an overview of schools and programs with ties to the environment across the university system.
Core campuses (Bloomington and Indianapolis)
How we engage with and relate to the environment is heavily influenced by the ideas we’re exposed to, the spaces we inhabit, and the products we use. Students of the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture, and Design at IU Bloomington and the Heron School of Art and Design at IU Indianapolis can explore how sustainability relates to fashion, photography, the built environment, and more.
As climate change threatens to disrupt global commerce, leading businesses and entrepreneurs are placing sustainability at the core of their organizations. The top-ranked Kelley School of Business offers a co-major in sustainable business for students interested in creating greener, more globally conscious ways to do business.
Preparing future generations for long-term environmental challenges begins in the classroom. Students at the IU School of Education learn to effectively teach key environmental concepts and empower students to take charge of their own learning and contribute to a sustainable planet.
The Integrated Program in the Environment (IPE) is IU Bloomington’s hub for academics, research, and activities focused on the environment. Administered by the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, the School of Public Health, and College of Arts and Sciences, IPE is preparing the next generation of scientists, policymakers, communicators, and leaders.
Understanding how human activity is changing the environment—and how nature can be leveraged to address environmental challenges—begins with the natural sciences, which include biology, chemistry, physics, and the earth sciences. The College of Arts and Sciences at IU Bloomington, the School of Science at IU Indianapolis, and the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs boast accomplished faculty across these fields who are intent on training the next generation to harness science for the greater good.
Environmental policy and management play a critical role in shaping our path toward climate stability. For more than 50 years, the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs has prepared students to be lead on societal challenges, including issues related to climate and the environment.
Climate change is more than an environmental concern, it’s also an outsized threat to public health. The School of Public Health at IU Bloomington, the Fairbanks School of Public Health at IUI, as well as the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs offer a diverse range of academic programs that prepare students to better understand and address the health risks linked to a warmer planet.
The most effective environmental solutions are oftentimes those informed by data. At the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering, students learn to harness cutting-edge technology and data science to drive decision-making and solve global problems.
