Gabriel Filippelli, executive director of Indiana University’s Environmental Resilience Institute (ERI), has been named to the National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate for Geosciences Advisory Committee.

In this capacity, Filippelli, who began his three-year appointment in January, will advise the NSF on geosciences education and research as well as provide guidance on NSF policy, program development, and long-term planning.

“It’s an honor to serve on this committee in support of all geoscientists, especially in this time where public trust in science is lower than ever before and the need for science to inform critical societal problems has never been more urgent,” Filippelli said. “From climate change to resource depletion to environmental justice, the geosciences have a sizable role to play in addressing society’s most pressing problems.”

The NSF Directorate for Geosciences invests in a wide range of science, supporting polar research, ocean observations, climate science, environmental contamination, and the intersection of environment and human health. The directorate strives to enhance the public's understanding of geoscience and nurture the next generation of researchers, with an emphasis on expanding opportunities for those who have historically been underrepresented in the field.

As a biogeochemist, Filippelli has received past NSF awards for projects that span the spectrum of geosciences research. This includes his work on pollutants in our air, water, and soil, as well as ways to engage communities to reduce their own exposures.

In addition to leading ERI, Filippelli is a Chancellor’s Professor of Earth Sciences at Indiana University Indianapolis and the Director of the Center for Urban Health.

He is the recent past editor-in-chief of the journal GeoHealth, a 2022 Fulbright Distinguished Chair, and former National Academy of Sciences Jefferson Science Fellow, where he served as a senior science advisor for the U.S. Department of State.
